Farewell Marion!

The Alexandria Campus community wished a very fond farewell to Library Specialist Marion Mirehouse after 36 years of service to the College.

Marion's primary responsibilities lay with the print periodical collection (and all of the association upheaval with the increasing and ongoing transition to digital sources).  Throughout her career she was also active at the campus and college level with such organizations as the VCCA and the (various iterations of) the campus environmental/green/conservation committee.

The Library also benefitted from Marion's green thumb:  She was the horticultural genius behind the plant life that is so prominent in the reading rooms.

Marion will be much missed by staff, faculty and students alike!

End of Term

The entire campus breathed a sigh of relief on Monday 13 May when the last Final Exam concluded, term came to an end, intersession began (no classes!!) and the College turned thoughts to Graduation on Sunday the 19th.

The last two weeks were busy ones in the Library as students finished final papers and projects and studied for final exams.  Because of the closure of the Tyler Building, several final were actually given in the Library!

From April 29 through May 10 the Library opened half an hour early and closed an hour late to provide more time for students to study, conduct research, seek assistance from library staff, use Course Reserve materials (textbooks!!), copy and print.

127 students used the Library before 8.30am and 335 stayed after 10pm for a grand total of 462 students using the Library at times it would otherwise be closed.



Lemonade, iced tea and sweet & savory snacks were also served as a study break toward the end of the evening.

Extended hours are made possible by the willingness of Library staff to re-arrange their schedules: come in early, go home late or cover extra shifts during "normal" hours.   

O'Hagan wins Netherton Award!

Congratulations to Library Specialist Kevin O'Hagan on winning the Jean C Netherton Award for Excellence in Service to the Campus.  The award was presented by Campus Council Vice-Chair Matt Todd and Alexandria Provost Dr Ron Buchanan on Thursday 2 May.

Kevin joins the roll-call of Library Netherton Winners (above) l-r: Bruce Carroll (2010), Marion Mirehouse (1990 -- the award looked a little different back then!), Matt Todd (2009), Kevin O'Hagan (2013), Kim Gross (2012).

The Library also sends a shout-out to our dean, Frances Villagran-Glover, who won for Administrative Faculty!

Study Early - Study Late!!

Once again the Alexandria Campus Library will open early and close late to provide additional time to study in the last week of classes and final exams.

For the week of 29 April and 6 May the Library hours will be:

Monday 29 April - Thursday 2 May:  8am - 11pm

Friday 3 May: 8am - 5pm

Saturday 4 May: 9am - 4pm

Monday 6 May - Thursday 9 May: 8am - 11pm

Friday 10 May: 8am - 5pm

Saturday 11 May: 9am - 4pm

Students are invited to enjoy a late-night study break of snacks and soft drinks in the 10pm hour.

The Alexandria Campus Library checks out more Course Reserve items (textbooks) than the libraries at Loudoun, Manassas, the MedicalEd and Woodbridge combined.

Our librarians and library staff have nine masters degrees between them. (and that’s just six people)

The Alexandria Library contains over 70,000 items.
Students searched Proquest over 210,000 times last year.

The Library adds over 2,000 books to the collection per semester.

Librarians teach over 130 classes per semester.

Almost 3,000 students receive research instruction in a classroom setting from campus librarians.

Use of online library resources has increased over 7 times in the last 7 years.

Library Makeover; kick-stools edition

Sometimes it's the all about the small stuff.

When the Alexandria Campus Library opened over 40 years ago it came equipped with a number of kick-stools to help the vertically-challenged reach the books on the top shelves and help the non-vertically-challenged have a temporary seat in the stacks.

Since that time those stools have been well-kicked:

The Library once again would like to thank the Netherton Trust for the funding to replace the old stools with a quantity of brand new ones for both levels (see below):

Alexandria Campus Celebrates a New Look

Thanks to the generosity of former Alexandria Provost Jean C. Netherton the Alexandria Campus Library was able to replace the existing chairs in student study spaces:

Yes, the old chairs pictured above were literally held together with duct tape, so the new furniture was a very welcome addition.

Thanks to the Jean C. Netherton Memorial Trust the Library was able to completely re-furnish the most heavily-used student spaces (and with over 170,000 visits made to the Library every semester they take a lot of wear and tear!).

In addition to all new lounge chairs in the Library "living room," (above) the Quiet Study Space got new chairs with tablet arms to acccommodate laptops and devices -- as well as books!! (see below) 

Finally, the Library Instructional Space also got a makeover with new chairs for students learning the finer points of library resarch (below):

Replacing the worn-out, uncomfortabe furniture was a request from the Student Government Association on behalf of all Library users.  Thanks to the Jean C. Netherton Trust for making one of the most heavily-used student spaces on campus conducive to learning and success.

Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month and the Alexandria Campus celebrated with a batch of recommended books.

We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents of former slaves and enrolled in high school at age twenty, he graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. In his studies he was disturbed to find that history books largely ignored the black American population, and it was not until the 20th century that they gained respectable presence in history books. Woodson determined to write black Americans into the nation’s history. In 1915 he established an organization to promote the scientific study of black life and history, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, February has much more than Douglass and Lincoln to show for its significance in black American history; each day of the month has its own accomplishments. After launching Negro History week (which became Black History Month), Woodson chose to provide a theme for each year to focus the public’s attention.
